Description of the plant:
Balsam fir originates from Canada where it is a source of Canadian balsam, derived from its bark. Nana is a dwarf variety that is cultivated for its beauty, not resin.Dwarf balsam fir is an evergreen conifer with short, deep green needles with white stomatal bands below, releasing strong balsam fragrance when crushed. It grows slowly, making outspreading branches that later form tiered effect. Some plants keep this tiered structure, other grow to a flattened globose shape. It does not produce cones.
Nana balsam fir is a beautiful conifer that requires no pruning whatsoever, we suggest leaving it to its own devices which will result in a unique habit. It is ideal for small gardens as well as those of Japanese style. It looks stunning surrounded by grey-white pebbles.
In the wild balsam fir grows in moist and almost wet sites, so it will need ample water when grown in the garden. It can take occasional waterlogging. Grow it in full sun or part shade. Thanks to its hardiness it can be placed in outdoor containers on patios and balconies - it is hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
