Description of the plant:
Bi-hoo is a new Japanese maple variety found by maple enthusiast, Mr.Masayoshi, in Japan in 1993. It was introduced and licensed in Europe by Maillot Nurseries in France in 2004. It is valued predominantly for its stunning colour in autumn and winter when the stronger branches and stems gain golden yellow or apricot orange shades, and thinner twigs turn salmon pink. Leaves are palmate, 5-lobed, deciduous, emerge medium green and remain fresh green all summer until autumn when they turn yellow, orange, and salmon pink. Bi-hoo maple has notably uniform habit, quite upright and well-behaved. It keeps a symmetrical, upwardly rounded shape that requires no or minimum pruning to look nice. Still, it can be pruned or trimmed, best in frost-free periods of winter.
Japanese maples need constantly moist soil that has to be well-drained, acidic to neutral, and medium fertile. Keep it mulched all year round. It will love a location with high air humidity, e.g. at a river bank or near a pond but it is not a must. Grow it in full sun for best colour. Fully hardy to min. -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
