Autumn monkshood is a showy perennial flowering from late summer till autumn. Royal Flush is a unique variety bred by Bob Brown from England in 1996. Its US patent PP16102 was granted in 2004 and its European patent was surrendered in 2016.
Description of the plant:
Royal Flush monkshood makes almost one meter tall, extra strong, maroon stems topped with erect racemes composed of huge, deep indigo blue flowers with anthracite anthers. The plant is very healthy which contrasts with many other perennials that are slowly becoming unsightly as they go dormant at the time this monkshood shows its assets. The stems are many branched offering multiple inflorescences and blooming until the last sunny and warm days of autumn. The leaves are dark green, deeply dissected, and highly glossy. Monkshood is a popular cut flower.

Monkshood is used especially in Chinese medicine, yet some caution is advised when working with the plant as all its parts are highly poisonous. Wearing gloves is suggested when working with the plant.

It grows in almost any moist and cool soil. It likes full sun or part shade. Fertilizing is not necessary but may enhance flowering – producing shorter racemes just below the main one. Fully hardy to about -40 °C (USDA zone 3).
