There are a number of hyssop species found in mostly temperate climate and only a few of them can survive winters of zones 5 or 6. ARIZONA™ is a series bred by American Takii and comprises of North American hybrids that withstand rigid winters better than the southern species.
Description of the plant:
ARIZONA™ Sandstone is an orange variety of hyssop, following its sister varieties ARIZONA™ Sun (yellow) and ARIZONA™ Sunset (pink). It produces masses of small, rich orange, tubular flowers from early summer until late autumn. They are loved by butterflies (and hummingbirds). The flowers are long and very slim and look great both in a cottage garden as well as in modern pots in cities. Leaves are pale green and highly scented. They contain an essence which is readily activated by just a soft touch and the foliage ejects a dose of anise and lemon perfume. They can be used to make tea of, for scenting fresh salads and also pastries when making cooked desserts – the essence brings not only perfume but also anise taste. The same applies for the edible flowers.

This agastache needs full sun and well-drained, sand-based, neutral to alkaline soil – in wet soil it will most certainly die during winter. Grow it in a mixed border, a rockery, or along pathways where you can enjoy its perfume when you gently crush its leaves just by passing it. Hardy to about -24°C (USDA zone 6) and we recommend covering the clump with fir branches for winter.
