Japanese anemone and its hybrids are late flowering perennials, commonly grown for late summer and autumn display of flowers. There are many varieties offering white, light or dark pink flowers atop stems of various heights. They are mostly considered shade loving plants, however, if grown in good, evenly moist soil they can thrive in full sun, too, especially white flowering plants which are less demanding for soil moisture. Plants from the Pretty Lady® series, bred by Yoshihiro Kanazawa and introduced in 2011 prove it because they live happily in full where they bloom more abundantly. So far there are 5 varieties, all of which are compact, very dense and bloom as early from late July until September.
Description of the plant:
Pretty Lady Emily® is a Japanese anemone hybrid, probably the shortest of all among the Pretty Lady® series. It produces semi-double, medium to light pink flowers decorated with a small crown of showy, rich yellow anthers in the centre. Stems are only about 30-40 cm tall and even young plants make numerous stems providing a great floral display in late summer. Basal leaves are deciduous, palmate, dark green, sharply toothed, sparsely hairy beneath. Patented as PP22303 in 2011.

Japanese anemones like moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil. When planted in full sun and if you live in area with cold winters make sure the plants are well mulched to keep the roots cool and away from dry frost. They prefer slightly drier conditions before flowering in early summer, as well as in winter. Anemones spread with aerial shoots which root easily so if you want to keep them in one place remove those shoots as and when they appear. Hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
