Description of the plant:
Dutchman's pipe is a vigorous climber native to America, found in moist woodlands from N.E.Canada to S.E.USA. It is cultivated for its dramatic large foliage which looks as if just escaped from a rainforest. The deciduous leaves are 10-30 cm across, fresh green, heart-shaped. In summer small pipe-like, sandy beige flowers are hidden under the foliage.Once established it grows very fast making about 1 meter per year or more. It quickly covers its support, be it a single post or a fence. Make sure to provide strong support - adult plants are quite heavy.
Dutchman's pine likes deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and full sun. It does not require any fertilizing and can be pruned in summer after flowering or in early spring. Being more difficult to propagate young plants tend to be much more expensive compared to other vines of the same size. Very hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4).
