Description of the plant:
ROYAL FROST is a trade name of a very attractive birch variety. It is a hybrid between betula populifolia „Whitespire“ and betula „Crimson Frost“. Deciduous leaves are diamond-shaped, serrated at margins, rich burgundy red in summer, and crimson red, purple, orange and yellow in autumn. This hybrid is popular for the combination of dark purple foliage and almost white bark which is pale amber orange on young trees, and becomes white as the tree grows stronger, making a thicker trunk.ROYAL FROST birch forms medium tall trees with narrowly pyramidal-shaped crowns and slender, arching branches. Pruning is not necessary in order to maintain a nice shape but is possible for any other reason – best in the middle of winter. It is fast growing.
It likes moist soil but adapts to all soil types, and it can even accept long periods of drought once established. Yet it dislikes enclosed areas with accumulated summer heat and lack of water which makes it unsuitable for city centres. For best foliage colour grow it in full sun. Fully hardy to min. -40°C (USDA zone 3).
