Bellflowers are popular perennials common both in our nature and our gardens. These maintenance-free plants are easy to grow, and offer several flower colours: mostly violet and white, and rarely blue and even pink. They bloom from early summer until autumn – upon variety.
Description of the plant:
Deep Blue Clips is a large-flowered variety of Carpathian bellflower. It bears typically violet flowers on short, erect stems that are about 5 cm above the leaves. The plants produce flowers from early July for a number of weeks, and blooming time can be extended by regular deadheading. The stems and leaves contain white sap which could cause discomfort if you are allergic. Leaves are light green, narrowly heart-shaped but the shape is not very clear as the margins are richly frilled. Cutting back the entire plant after flowering will encourage emerging of new leaves. Bellflowers like fertile, well-drained but evenly moist soil of almost any pH. They can be grown in full sun (never let it dry out completely) or part shade. Ideal for rockeries, as well as outdoor containers and troughs. My best suggestion is to grow them alongside orange flowering plants – the combination is just perfect. Hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4), allegedly it can take even deeper frost.
