Campsis grandiflora Chinese trumpet vine - climber
The flowers are large and spectacular: 7-9 cm wide, salmon pink with a clear yellow throat. In colder zones and locations with less sun they may turn deeper salmon-orange. In order to keep its pinkish colour we strongly suggest finding it a location with plenty of sunlight during most of the day. The buds form a raceme that blooms from end July until the last sunny and warm days of autumn. Pinnate leaves are dark green and glossy, and make a luxurious background for its bright coloured flowers.
This vine is a little more tender than the northern species so we recommend growing it on a sheltered location, e.g. in front of a south-facing wall or in a closed yard. Pruning is a crucial issue with this plant if you want a nice one. As it flowers on current year’s growths it is desirable to have plenty of new branches. So cut back last year’s branches to 2-3 pairs of live buds after danger of significant frosts (usually in April).
Trumpet vines like alkaline soil so never plant it along with peat-loving plants. The soil has to be well-drained because its root system can accept temporary drought once established but overwatering may result in plant’s death. We only sell GRAFTED plants that will flower the same year you buy them. It is hardy to about -24°C.
