Campsis trumpet creepers

To give you a rough guide through the profusion of the campsis colours, we sorted them by name, colour, size, and hardiness:


1. Campsis radicans – is the basic species of the hardiest trumpet creeper with long red flowers, usually bright orange on the outside, suckers are long and thin, buds form a cluster.

2. Campsis radicans „Flava“ – golden yellow flowers of the previous, also yellow on the outside, bright green leaves and medium-thick, long new suckers, buds form a cluster, very hardy.

3. Campsis radicans “Flamenco” – a variety of the basic radicans, with orange-red flowers that are mostly bright red on the outside, suckers are long and thin, buds form a cluster.

4. Campsis grandiflora – this is the basic species of the Chinese big-flower version, flowers are 7-10 cm wide, salmon pink with yellow throat and light orange on the outside, buds form a raceme that keeps growing, making news buds and flowers. It is hardy on sheltered, south-facing walls; it does not make long suckers.

5. Campsis x tagliabuana „Madame Galen“ – this is a beautiful cross between c.radicans and c.grandiflora, so it has salmon-red flowers that are mostly red on the outside, too. It flowers more abundantly than radicans and the size of the flowers is much larger, buds form a raceme, suckers are medium-sized, thick. Very hardy.

6. Campsis x tagliabuana „Indian Summer“ – also a cross between radicans a grandiflora, flowers are deep orange all over, buds are formed in a raceme, suckers are short and thick. Very hardy.


7. Campsis grandiflora „Morning Calm“ – a selection of c.grandiflora with extended hardiness and large, coral red to orange flowers with yellow throat. Flowers are orange on the outside; buds grow on a raceme that keeps growing, making new buds and flowers till the first frosts. This variety is patented in the USA and not yet licensed in Europe. Hardy on sheltered locations.
