Campsis x tagilabuana 'Mincamja3' GOLDEN TRUMPET® Italian trumpet vine, trumpet creeper

Campsis
The new millennium brings new options for modern hybrids of trumpet creepers that are bred in order to achieve more compact plants with shorter twigs or larger flowers in various colours. Italian trumpet vine was developed in Italy in 1893, when in a nursery near Milan two brothers Alberto Linneo Tagliabue and Carlo Tagliabue crossed the Chinese species c. grandiflora with the North American species c. radicans. The result was a less vigorous vine with strong branches and improved hardiness over c. grandiflora. Its flowers are larger and form a raceme as opposed to c. radicans. The inflorescence is rather erect or slightly horizontal which refers to one of its parents: Indian Summer variety, which is not typically pendulous as in case of other large-flowered Italian or Chinese trumpet vines. GOLDEN TRUMPET was introduced in 2019 and is protected by patents PP329311 (USA – 2021) and EU 55665 (Europe – 2020).
Deciduous leaves are large, bright green, partially glossy, attractively pinnate and, thanks to their quantity, they perfectly cover the entire plant and will quickly offer vertical screening. Trumpet vine is a climbing plant with taproots that can grip almost any support, including glass, but do not damage it in any way. Campsis is not vining, therefore, it doesn’t need a trellis, just a surface its taproots can cling to. Every spring after all frosts prune it back to 2-3 pairs of buds on previous year’s wood. It flowers on new wood.
Trumpet vine loves sun and heat. Its deep and fleshy roots can cope with long-lasting drought and watering is not necessary from the second year after planting, even in hot summers. It prefers rather alkaline soil; we do not recommend combining it with peat-loving shrubs or trees. The ground must not be waterlogged and all excess water after snow thawing and heavy rains must always drain away, otherwise its roots will rot. All it needs to flower abundantly is the sun and heat. Selective fertilizers for flower production in summer can help but are not necessary, yet they can prolong flowering time and even encourage formation of new lateral flowering shoots. Grafted plants bloom from the first year, plants propagated by cuttings from 5 to 7 years of age. Fully hardy to approx. -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
