One of the original trees found in natural woodlands of Europe is hornbeam. Varieties of this deciduous tree are becoming more and more popular in gardens, too.
Description of the plant:
Frans Fontaine is a lovely street tree as well as an elegant feature plant in front of a house. It is a slow growing tree with mid green, deciduous leaves that turn bright yellow in autumn. It has a symmetrical oval-shaped crown that remains compact.

Being a slow grower it usually does not require pruning but can be kept smaller by pruning in early spring. Hornbeams do best in full sun and are not fussy about soil type. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
