Cedars are beautiful, architectural trees that attract us with their irregular monumental crowns, mainly in southern Europe under the Alps. There are 4 species in this genus among which the hardiest are Atlas cedar (bluegreen) and cedar of Lebanon (green).Description of the plant:
Cedar of Lebanon is a majestic specimen tree with needle-like dark green to blue-green foliage that looks like larch but is evergreen. Young trees are densely branched from the ground but low branches can be removed in the autumn if planted close to houses to make more room beneath. The branches are long, almost horizontal, the ends tend to droop with age. Although this is a hardy species we do not recommend planting it in mountainous regions with prolonged winter periods or in frost pockets. If the needles are damaged by severe frosts the tree usually makes new ones in late spring. It grows reliably in any soil type, even chalky, and needs a sunny location with plenty of space. In his home – Lebanon to Turkey – it grows up to 30m, in our continental climate (zone 6) seldom reaches more than 20m. Hardy to min. -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
