Description of the plant:
Japanese (kousa) dogwoods are very attractive trees or tall shrubs which unlike cornus florida produce flowers after the plant is fully leafed, at the end of May. Cappuccino is a brand new variety with coloured leaves. They emerge bright green soon changing to bronze in the sun and deep burgundy red or crimson-brown. They are deciduous, broadly ovate with noticeable veins, and droop down similarly as on pear trees. Tiny green flowers are surrounded by 4 showy creamy-white bracts, which can be 6-8 cm wide. Edible and often delicious and sweet fruits ripen at the end of summer, they are pink and litchi-shaped and create a colourful display. Usual height in our climate is about 2 meters as it spreads to sides rather than grows high. It forms horizontal branches, which make this small tree an ideal specimen growing on its own. It prefers acidic, moist soil; it withstands windy areas.
