Cotinus coggygria 'YOUNG LADY' smoke tree

Young Lady smoke tree should probably be called smoke bush as it is a slower growing and more compact variety that commonly forms a dense shrub, not a tree unless grafted. In early summer it makes large filamentous panicles of tiny flowers with long, beige to light pink hairs which create an amazing fluffy appearance for 1-2 months. The leaves are broadly ovate, almost rounded, deciduous, grass-green and turn yellow, orange, and red in autumn.

Young Lady is a moderate grower and can be pruned in early spring – do not cut more than one half of last year’s growth. Harder pruning will result in radical growth but no flowering and too long branches that might not produce flowers.

It is tolerant of wide range of soils but will thrive in well-drained, moderately fertile, moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4), and suitable for outdoor pots.
