Deutzia

Deutzia and its hybrids are deciduous shrubs from the hydrangea family, native to East Asia and America. The first mention of it can be found in Japan, where Engelbert Kaempfer first saw the species Deutzia scabra in 1712, but it took more than a hundred years for Deutzia to reach Europe. The name Deutzia was given by the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg in honour of his friend and patron, Johann van der Deutz, an 18th-century Dutch botanist. The plant is popular for its abundant white or pink inflorescences that bloom in late spring. Being easy to grow, pollution resistant, and very hardy, it has become one of the key landscape plants even in locations with poor growing conditions and limited maintenance. The shrubs provide shelter and food for garden animals, thereby contributing to biodiversity. The bark and leaves of some species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine long before the Western world even discovered Deutzia.
Description of the plant:
RASPBERRY SUNDAE is a horticultural treat. Ever since its introduction in 2014, this Deutzia has been outperforming many other older varieties. Bred by English grower Ian J. Ashton from Warsash in Southampton (Southern England) it is a cross between Magicien (a variety) and D. setchuenensis var corymbifolia (a Chinese species). It is protected by plant patents 53093 (EU – 2019) and PP30793 (USA – 2019).

Its greatest assets lie in its compact growth and the abundance of flowers which are produced along the entire length of the new branches. The flowers are very similar to the female parent and recall those of the famous varieties Strawberry Fields or Tourbillon Rouge – 5-petalled, white with rosy pink tips and a lovely crown of stamens in the centre. It blooms from about mid-May to mid-June, depending on the season’s weather, and right after flowering we recommend pruning the shrub to prevent the formation of unsightly seed pods. The plant will then produce new shoots that will be fresh and not exhausted from flowering and will again offer abundant flowering the following year. It flowers on previous year's wood. The leaves are deciduous, medium green, narrowly ovate to oval.

RASPBERRY SUNDAE Deutzia forms very compact and dense shrubs of smaller size, so you can incorporate it even into a small yard which was not possible with previous similarly coloured varieties due to their vigorous growth. It reaches a height and width of just over one meter. It is undemanding of soil type or fertilization. It prefers a sunny location and moist soil but will also grow in partial shade. It is fully hardy to at least -30 °C, possibly more, and is suitable for planters.
