Deutzia
Deutzia and its hybrids are deciduous shrubs from the hydrangea family, native to East Asia and America. The first mention of it can be found in Japan, where Engelbert Kaempfer first saw the species Deutzia scabra in 1712, but it took more than a hundred years for Deutzia to reach Europe. The name Deutzia was given by the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg in honour of his friend and patron, Johann van der Deutz, an 18th-century Dutch botanist. The plant is popular for its abundant white or pink inflorescences that bloom in late spring. Being easy to grow, pollution resistant, and very hardy, it has become one of the key landscape plants even in locations with poor growing conditions and limited maintenance. The shrubs provide shelter and food for garden animals, thereby contributing to biodiversity. The bark and leaves of some species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine long before the Western world even discovered Deutzia.Description of the plant:
Tourbillon Rouge deutzia was selected by the French nursery Lemoine and Sons in 1930’s as a cross between D. longifolia and D. discolor. It is a deciduous shrub with fantastic and surprisingly fragrant flowers. They are deep pink grading to pale pink with almost white margins. Oblong-lanceolate leaves are deciduous, mid green, slightly drooping, turning yellow and pink in the autumn. Another interesting feature is the reddish-orange bark with white stripes on new branches and peeling off on older branches, which is best viewed in winter when there is a layer of fresh snow around. It is a stunning sight especially on a sunny day.The shrub has a beautiful, regular, narrowly vase shape. To encourage the best shape and profuse flowering we suggest removing all branches that had flowers immediately after flowering as it blooms on last year’s wood. Mature shrubs can grow to the same height you reduced it by within the same season. It forms a compact shrub and is suitable for small gardens, too.
Deutzias are quite soil adaptable. Our specimen was planted in full sun, heavy soil and received no fertilizing whatsoever, and is just stunning with abundant flowering every year. It likes full sun and moist soil but will also grow in semi-shade. Fully hardy to about -30°C (USDA zone 5).
