Deutzia

Deutzia and its hybrids are deciduous shrubs from the hydrangea family, native to East Asia and America. The first mention of it can be found in Japan, where Engelbert Kaempfer first saw the species Deutzia scabra in 1712, but it took more than a hundred years for Deutzia to reach Europe. The name Deutzia was given by the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg in honour of his friend and patron, Johann van der Deutz, an 18th-century Dutch botanist. The plant is popular for its abundant white or pink inflorescences that bloom in late spring. Being easy to grow, pollution resistant, and very hardy, it has become one of the key landscape plants even in locations with poor growing conditions and limited maintenance. The shrubs provide shelter and food for garden animals, thereby contributing to biodiversity. The bark and leaves of some species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine long before the Western world even discovered Deutzia.
Description of the plant:
Deutzia crenata originates from Japan, but until 1992 many of its varieties were mistakenly classified as D. scabra. This is one example named Pride of Rochester, which was developed and introduced in 1882 by George Ellwanger and Patrick Berry from the Mount Hope Nursery in Rochester, New York. This is a fast growing, deciduous shrub with abundant inflorescences composed of fully double, snow-white flowers that bloom from early June. The deciduous leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, and medium green.

Pride of Rochester deutzia forms upright shrubs that spread into a wide V-shape with age and reaches a little over two meters in height and slightly less in width when mature. The shrub is also interesting in winter when the greyish-red bark begins to peel off on older branches. Pruning is not necessary, but in order to prevent from the formation of unattractive seed pods you can prune back flowered branches by half to two-thirds. Do so immediately after flowering as it blooms on previous year’s wood and must produce new branches by winter. It is a typical shrub for cottage gardens, public greenery, and informal landscapes where it will provide natural and flowering screening as opposed to classic pruned hedges.

Deutzias are hardy, trouble-free, resistant to diseases and pests, and can thrive in almost any soil. They do not require fertilization, but a bit of extra nutrients will enhance their appearance in a well-maintained garden. They prefer sunny locations and moist soil but will also grow in partial shade. Fully hardy to about -30°C (USDA zone 5).
