Beech is a reliable and hardy tree of our climate. There are many wild forms, hybridized varieties, and selections on market these days that can satisfy the taste of almost everyone. Rohan Obelisk is a selection among seedlings of Dawyck beech, possibly pollinated by Czech variety Rohanii. It is easily recognizable by two features – red and serrated foliage and fastigiate growth.Description of the plant:
Rohan Obelisk beech produces deciduous leaves with coarse margins. They are glossy, slightly undulated, and emerge bright burgundy red, mature to deep copper red to almost brown-red while leaves which lack direct sunlight are dark green. In autumn they turn amber orange and brown for a short period of time. It makes a medium tall and fastigiate tree, slender like a hungry model before a show, becoming a little chubby after a few decades when there is no risk of too many eyes watching her. Despite its mature size of 8-12m it is popular also in mid-sized gardens where it is kept smaller by regular pruning in spring. This way you can also achieve a much denser habit.
Beech can live in a wide range of well-drained soils, from slightly alkaline to slightly acid. Red-leaved forms need full sun for best leaf colour. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
