European beech is a reliable and hardy tree of our climate. There are many wild forms and hybridized varieties and selections on market these days that can satisfy the taste of almost everyone. Beeches can offer various colours of foliage and sizes from dwarf to extra large.Description of the plant:
Riversii (syn. 'Purpurea Major') is a variety of European beech, a slow growing big tree with deep maroon leaves. They are elliptic-ovate, deciduous, emerge bright burgundy red, maturing to deep purple maroon and deep green inside the crown in summer, and eventually turn copper orange in autumn. Natural habit is quite airy when young, thickening the crown with age. Adult trees develop a widely oval to almost rounded crowns. Thanks to its slow growth rate it is used also in mid-sized gardens where its size can be controlled by regular pruning at the end of winter.
It can live in a wide range of well-drained soils, from slightly alkaline to slightly acid. Red-leaved forms need full sun for best leaf colour. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
