Gentian is one of the most beautiful perennials where the most sought-after varieties bear blue flowers. It’s because their blue is true blue, bluer than the ocean, darker than the summer sky, almost like indigo. The family consists of more than 400 species which often hybridize among themselves. One of the breeders who managed to obtain a very nice and at the same time easy-to-grow variety is Nils Klemm from Stuttgart, Germany, who has over 400 patents for new inventions of both perennials and annuals. The variety is called LUIS EASY BLUE and is protected by the following patents: PP26296 (USA - 2015), 41045 (Europe - 2015), and 33371 (GB - 2009).
Description of the plant:
LUIS EASY BLUE is classified as a variety of autumn gentian (g. scabra) which commonly starts blooming in August. However, the breeder himself admits that the male parent of his hybridization was an unknown species which resulted in a plant that starts to flower already in June and continues for 4-6 weeks. Its flowers are broadly trumpet-shaped, rich blue with white throat and strings of deep indigo to almost black dots. Under ideal conditions, strong plants can repeat flowering in late summer. Evergreen leaves are dark green and glossy, thick, somewhat ovate to lanceolate, and pointed. Plants are compact.

Gentian is a slow growing, mat-forming perennial requiring zero maintenance. Plant it in humus-rich, reliably moist but well-drained soil in full sun or only partial shade. Autumn flowering species require slightly acid soil. Hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
