Avens is a pretty perennial whose wild forms can be found on every continent except Australia. Scarlet avens comes from the Balkans and is cultivated for its compact growth and extremely long flowering period.
Description of the plant:
Borisii is a scarlet avens variety with rich orange flowers for a long time. Its single, 5-petalled flowers open atop 20-30 cm tall stems from early May, and continue flowering for 6-8 weeks. After a short summer break the plant repeats flowering, this time on shorter stems, until the last sunny and warm days of autumn. Basal leaves are rounded to kidney-shaped, shallowly toothed, mid green, and resemble those of pelargonium. They make a nice groundcover in mass plantings which remains evergreen in mild winters.

Avens is not picky about soil type. It does best in fertile, medium moist but well-drained soil in full sun. A little extra feeding will bring lush foliage but is not necessary for flower production – avens will always flower if grown in full sun. Hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
