Description of the plant:
Caramel is a coral bells hybrid variety of heuchera villosa. It offers robust and compact growth with large leaves and improved resistance to summer drought. Its leaves emerge salmon pink and mature to light toffee brown and amber orange. They form dense, dome-shaped mounds. In summer rise 50-60 cm tall, thin stems with terminal panicles composed of profuse tiny creamy white flowers. The leaves are reliably evergreen in mild winters. The undersides are magenta pink.This variety was found in 2003 by Sandrine Delabroy in the small town of Hantay in northern France near the Belgian border. It was a chance seedling in a field of heuchera villosa. It was granted a U.S. Patent No. PP16560 in 2006.
Coral bells can take almost any soil with ample moisture and good drainage. They do best in partial shade or filtered sun, however, if you make sure they will not dry out you can place them in full sun, too. They can also live in dark shade where their colours will not be too rich, such location is usually best for light coloured varieties. Cut off all leaves in early spring to encourage growth of new foliage. Fully hardy to abt. -34 °C (USDA zone 4), and suitable for outdoor pots.
