Over the years of hard breeding work Terra Nova® Nurseries from Canby in Oregon, USA, have become a synonym for heucheras thanks to their skilful breeder Janet N. Egger. And when one might think that there’s nothing more to come up with they introduce a whole new series called NORTHERN EXPOSURE™ in 2017. They combine findings of Modern Research breeding station in Manitoba, Canada, and Janet’s ground-breaking hybridizing of h. richardsonii with pelargonium-like foliage. The resulting plants are not only beautiful but also hardier, surviving as much as -40 °C, they are rust resistant and have shorter flowering stems.
Description of the plant:
NORTHERN EXPOSURE™ Silver is a coral bells variety with leaves richly marbled with silvery-grey colour. They are bright burgundy red in spring and turn deep purple red in summer and autumn. They are orbicular (rounded in shape), shallowly lobed, and evergreen. From spring till late summer appear about 45 cm tall, red stems holding small, bell-shaped, white flowers. Heuchera is a fast-growing perennial of mounding habit. NORTHERN EXPOSURE™ Silver was bred by Janet Egger and patented as PP29420 (USA, 2018) and EU51863 (Europe, 2019).

Coral bells can take almost any soil with ample moisture and good drainage. They do best in partial shade or filtered sun, however, if you make sure they will not dry out you can place them in full sun, too. They can also live in dark shade where their colours will not be too rich, such location is usually best for light coloured varieties. Cut off all leaves in early spring to encourage growth of new foliage. This series is fully hardy to abt. -40 °C (USDA zone 3), and suitable for outdoor pots.
