Plantain lilies are reliable perennials from East Russia, Korea, China, and Japan. In the wild they grow in various locations – along rocky stream-banks, in alpine meadows, as well as in not too shaded woodland. They are cultivated for their bold foliage, often variegated, and bell-shaped flowers in summer.
Description of the plant:
June is a fantastic plantain lily variety that was voted Hosta of the Year 2001 by the American Hosta Society. The best colouring is achieved if grown in full sun – then the leaves will have almost yellow centres with some light green streaks towards the blue-green margins. They are broadly lance-shaped, with a distinct tip. Flowers are bell-shaped, light lavender violet, atop stems reaching some 40 cm.

Hostas need constantly moist, fertile soil that never dries out. Keep them mulched at all times. Drought can result in weakened plants that will be prone to diseases. June variety is slug resistant. If grown in full sun it will have rich 3 contrasting colours: yellow, light green, and blue-green. In partial shade the leaves will change to several shades of green with some blue overlay, and in full shade it will get almost completely blue-green. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
