Description of the plant:
Torulosa Chinese juniper is a unique variety that grabs attention in any garden. Young plants grow strictly upright forming a slender column, and as they age new branches appear at the bottom, swerving a bit from the central leader, but soon returning to its upright growth. This results in a flame-like form that makes this juniper so outstanding. Torulosa juniper is nice to touch – non prickly. That is because it makes small, scale-like leaves (needles), lying flat along the stems. They are rich emerald green from spring until autumn, and gain light bronze shades in cold areas in winter.
It grows moderately and can be pruned in any way, however, it is not required or even recommended since its natural habit is so interesting. Chinese juniper likes full sun or some shade but will not thrive in deep shade. The soil should be well-drained, preferably calcareous and equally moist throughout the year – it does not like drought, so keep it mulched. In protected locations it can be grown in large outdoor pots. Hardy to about -37°C (USDA zone 5b).
