Junipers are popular, evergreen conifers that are 100% maintenance-free plants that will grow almost anywhere. There are plentiful of varieties, each of which is suitable for a slightly different use.
Description of the plant:
Hibernica is an old juniper variety first introduced in 1838, and still in popular demand, especially for its habit and reliability. Hibernica juniper is an evergreen, columnar shrub of dense habit. It has short, prickly, rich green needles with bluish hues. The branches grow strictly upwards and do not bend under a heavy snowfall. Plants younger than 10 years are usually slimmer than 50 cm and mature plants can be upto 1.5 m wide and 5m tall. If too big you can easily prune it in early spring to keep it smaller, or shape it in midsummer. Grow juniper in any soil, including chalky, that is not boggy. It will tolerate drought. It is fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4) and suitable for outdoor pots for a limited period of time – this plant is too large for a pot.
