Savin juniper finds its home in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe, Caucasus, Siberia, and northern parts of China. It is known for its soft, non-prickly needles which are so nice to touch, as well as orange- to reddish-brown bark, peeling off in rather large flakes.
Description of the plant:
Variegata is a compact variety of Savin juniper with light yellow variegation. The main colour is deep green while some shoots come out rich beige or almost yellow coloured. The colder the weather the richer the colour. It grows slowly into a prostrate shrub of an interesting shape that could perhaps be described as clotted-cream shape.

Savin juniper is not picky about growing conditions. It is such an easy plant to have in the garden – it takes quite adverse and opposing conditions such as full sun and part shade, dry and moist, alkaline and acid soil, cottage garden space as well as city paving and pollution. Pruning is possible at any time from early spring until midsummer, you can even cut into old wood. It is hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3), and is suitable for outdoor containers and troughs.
