Koelreuteria paniculata 'FASTIGIATA' golden rain tree

Fastigiata golden-rain tree has strictly upright, slender habit compared to the large-headed species. It forms a columnar, very dense tree well-branched (feathered) from the ground. In late spring emerge pink leaflets, composed in pinnate 30-45 cm long leaves, and mature to rich but not dark green in summer. They are beautifully lace-like serrated at margins and in autumn turn golden orange or scarlet red (each seedling has different colouring).
Flowers appear at the end of new twigs in late July or early August and last for as long as 4 weeks. They are upto 40 cm long panicles composed of small, bright yellow flowers with orange spot, and the latest flowers may appear while the panicle already produced beautifully salmon pink, lantern-like capsules with seeds.
Golden-rain tree is adaptable to most soil types but dislikes muddy, heavy clay-based, and cold ground. It even tolerates pollution of any kind - a perfect choice for urban areas. It needs a hot summer for reliable flowering and a sunny spot. Pruning is best done in spring after all frost but is usually not needed since the tree keeps a nice habit without any control. Very hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5), but very young plants need some winter protection.
