Description of the plant:
Lily-turf is a unique plant that is often sold in grass sections of garden centres. However, it belongs to the lily family, hence its name. It comes from shady forests of Eastern Asia. Liriope has dark green, ribbon-like, semi-glossy foliage. The leaves are narrow and evergreen in mild winters. Beginning of summer spikes of lavender or violet flowers come out. They are usually not taller that 10-20 cm above the leaves. New spikes are produced continuously until early autumn.
In warmer parts of Europe this plants spreads out readily. In our climate (zone 6) it stays compact. It does well in moist, humus-rich soil but will tolerate almost any well-drained soil. Mulching is recommended in frost prone areas. Hardy.
