Description of the plant:
Among deciduous magnolias there are varieties that bloom later than most of the Asian ones. This selection named Charles Coates originated in England in Kew, famous for its Kew Gardens, by crossing m.sieboldii and m.tripetala.It makes leaves first, and only at the end of spring it shows a magnificent display of flowers. They have 9-12 creamy to snow white tepals, and a conspicuous centre of purple-red stamens. They are about 10 cm wide when fully opened and unlike one of its parent m.tripetala they have a lovely fragrance. They appear even on young plants and resemble the flowers of its US evergreen sister m.grandiflora. Leaves are ovate, bright to deep green, clustered at the shoot tips, up to 25 cm long. The shrub grows medium slow to medium fast and forms a dense, regular rounded shape. It needs fertile, moist and permeable soil that is acidic (needs peat). Protect from strong winds.
