Magnolia

Dennis Ledvina (1939-2015) was an American magnolia enthusiast and breeder, mentored by greats like August Kehr and Phil Savage. He is remembered as a generous and friendly person, always willing to share his knowledge as well as plants, which he donated in hundreds or possibly thousands. He was from Green Bay, Wisconsin, which falls within hardiness zones 3b (-37 °C) to 5b (-27 °C), i.e., quite inhospitable conditions for tender plants. No wonder that his main goal was to breed new magnolias that were not only hardy enough to thrive in such environment, but also such that would start to bloom later to avoid the late frosts which could kill many of just open flowers. Additionally, he focused on a more slender habit to fit small landscapes and extended blooming period as magnolias are renowned for their short flowering time. Throughout his life, he bred over 80 varieties, however, many of his creations were subject to further selections made by other breeders. Therefore, when reading about their introduction to the market you may encounter different names of those who only selected individual specimens among many results of Ledvina's trials and gave them names. Even we were often puzzled by this practice until we got to the truth 😊.

Description of the plant:
Pink Charm is a pink-flowered and highly attractive magnolia variety that, along with Rose Marie, emerged from the crossing of Pink Surprise and Daybreak. It was bred and introduced by Dennis Ledvina in 2013. The flowers are bright pink on the outside, pale pink to almost white on the inside, and have a typical lily-like shape. When fully open, they measure 20-28 cm. The deciduous leaves are oval and medium green. It grows into a dense shrub or small tree with a slender habit, suitable even for small gardens. It grows slowly and flowers profusely because each mature branch tip bears a flower bud. It blooms from around mid-April.

Magnolias are not supposed to be pruned. You can prune old shrubs if ill, or trim them to shape or to reduce size, or make an elementary cut to young plants of unsightly or unhealthy appearance. Do this as soon as possible after flowering to secure setting of flower buds for the following year. Be aware that each magnolia can respond differently to pruning.

Deciduous magnolias are quite easy plants. All they need is light, well-drained, acidic soil with equal moisture throughout the year. Once established they can do with occasional drought but will not look as nice as the ones with regular watering. Just pay attention to how you plant your magnolia. First, find it a spot where it will live forever and ever. It does not like transplanting. And as it makes shallow roots reaching well over its spread, stay away from disturbing the roots by digging or messing about around it. Just cover the soil with bark mulch and do not plant anything else near it after say the second year after planting onwards. You could damage the important top roots that absorb maximum moisture and nutrients from the soil. Also avoid planting magnolia too deep. Thus, you could be digging it a grave. Hardy to at least -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
