Description of the plant:
Little Spire is a lovely dwarf variety of Russian sage. It is a very hardy plant originally found in Central Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan) but it is successfully grown even further north. Flowers are borne in 50-60 cm tall panicles, they are violet and appear from mid-summer until early autumn. The leaves are silvery blue-green and stems grey-white. In full bloom the plant looks like covered in a silvery-violet cloud.
Grow in full sun and preferably poor soil with good drainage that will enable the plant survive wet winters. After making an extensive root system it is quite draught tolerant. Cut back to 20-30 cm every spring to maintain a dense and bushy plant with many new shoots that will flower abundantly. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4).
