Pine trees are superb trees which grow in a wide climate scale - from cold northern countries to hot coastal sites. They are probably most beautiful in their natural environment.
Description of the plant:
Japanese white pine and its variety Glauca is very popular for its slightly twisted, silvery blue and green foliage. The needles are 5-6 cm long, deep green at the base, with conspicuous silvery blue stripes. It grows slowly into an irregular, large shrub. It is not a tree as such. Its bark is smooth and light grey and shows off its colour mainly at the end of season when old needles fall down to reveal the surface of thicker branches.

This pine is grown for its impressive shape which is unique in every plant. It is seldom pruned, however, size can be reduced by removing new growths or cutting them in halves in mid spring. This conifer is used for giant bonsais, too. As every pine, it needs full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Do not over-water pines but make sure it does not dry out when re-planted. Absolutely hardy to approx. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
