Description of the plant:
If you like pines with soft needles, white pines are the best choice. Radiata is an old variety from 1923 which is a slow grower with silvery blue-green needles decorated with green underneath. The appearance is fluffy and you feel like touching it everytime you pass it. Radiata forms a mounding habit when young, but after a few years a central leader develops which aims strictly upward to the sky and which can reach as much as 4m tall. If left unpruned, such plant will change its shape to widely pyramidal, loose its fluffy appearance, and will resemble a dwarf version of a white pine. However, the usual practice is to remove the leader from the very beginning in the middle of the shrub so that the habit remains oval or rounded, and full.
Pines prefer full sun and well-drained soil that will be kept moist for the first year after transplanting. It is extremely hardy and can be grown in an outdoor pot. Hardy to about -39°C.
