Description of the plant:
This ornamental cherry plum is popular in demand for its deep burgundy leaves, almost no maintenance at all and no special soil requirements. Deciduous leaves are ovate to elliptic, of deep burgundy red colour. Such shade is perfect to break an overall green landscape with or to be used in front of a house with façade of pale colour shades (cream, gray etc.).
Nigra (=Pissardii Nigra) variety was selected for its abundant flowering. Its pure pink flowers have deep red calyxes which makes a lovely contrast. They are not as big as flowers on Japanese cherries but the branches are covered with them.
It grows upright, spreading at the top of the crown when older. Although it does not require pruning but to achieve a compact shape we suggest to prune it every spring when the plant is young.
This tree withstands air-pollution and can be used for urban zones industrial areas. It is quite soil adaptable. However, if you do want a beautiful specimen with profusion of flowers and dark leaves grow it in full sun, in acidic, well-drained soil that will not suffer from summer drought. Apply a slow-release fertilizer every spring. Fully hardy to -40°C (USDA zone 3).
