Impeditum is a dwarf, mounding rhododendron species from China which is often hybridized to achieve different flower colours and leaf types. It is very hardy and durable and withstands full sun. It is a popular plant even among gardeners who are not fond of fancy large-flowered hybrid rhododendrons. Saint Merryn is an English variety bred by Major-General Eric G.W.W. Harrison (1893-1987) from Cornwall and introduced in 1970.
Description of the plant:
Saint Merryn is a dwarf rhododendron renowned especially for its attractive foliage covering the plant all year round. The evergreen leaves are small, elliptic, deep olive green, glossy, and fragrant when crushed. In early May open abt. 3 cm wide, violet-pink flowers in profusion. It slowly forms mounding so somewhat dome-shaped shrubs with tiered branches in maturity.

As a sun-tolerant species it can be placed in a large rockery or a border with other sun-loving ericaceous plants like heather and deciduous azaleas. It is a perfect ground cover under tall trees and a low companion for compositions with large shrubs. Unless you are making a bonsai do not prune it. Any form or trimming or shearing should be done immediately after flowering. Old plants can be rejuvenated by hard pruning in early spring (before flowering).

Grow this dwarf type in any location from full sun to full shade, just make sure it is always well mulched. The roots are shallow, spreading to sides in search for nutrients. Never plant it too deep. The soil has to be acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), rich in humus, cool, always moist but well-drained (no clay). Ideal soil mixture is peat with lime-free, light garden soil topped with leaf mould. Fully hardy to min. -27°C (USDA zone 5b), possibly more.
