Rhododendron 'UTE SYE' dwarf rhododendron

Ute Sye is an attractive dwarf rhododendron cross between r. dendrocharis and r. ‘Razorbill’, bred by Wolfgang Reich from Germany. It blooms already from late April and produces dense trusses composed of 20-30 small, funnel-shaped flowers that are rich purplish red outside and pale pink to almost white inside. Evergreen leaves are small, oval, medium green, and partly glossy. Ute Sye forms slender, upright shrubs about 80 cm tall and only 40 cm wide. It was bred in 2001 and registered in 2010, and named after breeder’s sister-in-law.

As a sun-tolerant species it can be placed in a large rockery or a border with other sun-loving ericaceous plants like heather and deciduous azaleas. It is a perfect ground cover under tall trees and a low companion for compositions with large shrubs. Unless you are making a bonsai do not prune it. Any form or trimming or shearing should be done immediately after flowering. Old plants can be rejuvenated by hard pruning in early spring (before flowering).

Grow this dwarf type in any location from full sun to full shade, just make sure it is always well mulched. The roots are shallow, spreading to sides in search for nutrients. Never plant it too deep. The soil has to be acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), rich in humus, cool, always moist but well-drained (no clay). Ideal soil mixture is peat with lime-free, light garden soil topped with leaf mould. Fully hardy to min. -23°C (USDA zone 6), possibly more (under trials).
