Description of the plant:
Black-eyed Susan is a type of coneflower with large, daisy-like flowers. This form originates in North America where its Latin name is shortened to rudbeckia sullivantii. Goldsturm, however, is a European variety with very large flowers that are 9-12 cm across, golden yellow with elevated, chocolate brown centres hiding nectar so loved by butterflies and bumble bees. It is earlier than most rudbeckias, beginning to flower already in early August. The stems of Goldsturm are strong, about 60 cm tall, and well branched. They usually resist summer storms. Leaves are broadly ovate to lance-shaped, mid green, slightly hairy, with prominent veins.
Coneflower will tolerate almost any soil type but boggy. It loves full sun. Deadheading will prolong flowering time. It is suitable for mixed borders with perennials, or can be used as a flowering feature among low shrubs and conifers, and looks lovely when planted in a mass in a container on patios and balconies. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
