Japanese umbrella pine is an exquisite-looking conifer resembling pines thanks to its needles but botanically these two species have nothing in common. Some say that umbrella pines might be related to Tertiary equisetum (horsetail) but who knows if that is a scientific theory or just a wild guess. Either way it is a gorgeous plants and today there are quite a few varieties available in the trade, some are up to 3m tall while others are much smaller and will fit even a small garden.
Description of the plant:
Green Bullet is an English alternative variety name for a Japanese umbrella pine from Germany where it is sold as Grüne Kügel. It boasts a compact, almost perfectly spherical habit and evergreen, glossy, dark green, succulent needles. It grows rather slowly, making only some 10 cm per year and reaching some 1.5m (H+W) in maturity. Its dwarf growth and limited size makes it a perfect choice for small city gardens, large pots, or Japanese style landscapes.

Japanese umbrella pines are said to do best in semi-shade or filtered sun, however, we experienced best results when grown in full sun and moist but well-drained, medium-fertile, slightly acidic soil. In winter it may gain bronze shades which manifests withdrawal of chlorophyll. This is a common procedure the plant undergoes to protect itself from excess cold. In spring it will turn back rich green again. Reasonable fertilizing will help it grow stronger and keep a good colour, over fertilizing may result in too long, unsightly shoots prone to frost damage. Full hardy to min. -29°C, perhaps more (USDA zone 5).
