Description of the plant:
Smaragd (or Emerald) is an old variety of white cedar, popular for its dense growth and columnar habit which is useful especially in small gardens where a hedge made of it should not take up much space. It has rich emerald green scale-like leaves that do not turn brown in winter, if placed in full sun they only loose its vibrant shade but remain green. Smaragd white cedar is so narrow that it does not require regular pruning like other thujas. Just when it gets too tall you can clip the tops to keep it at the required height.
Arborvitae can be pruned and clipped from spring to late summer, just avoid cutting into old wood. It is soil tolerant but dislikes boggy locations and long-standing water as well as long-lasting drought. Just keep the soil moist after planting by mulching, and you will get a fantastic plant. It is extremely hardy and allegedly can take frosts down to -40°C (USDA zone 4) and is suitable for outdoor pots.
