Description of the plant:
Eastern hemlock is a native plant of North America, precisely eastern parts of Canada. Still, this variety comes from a German nursery town Jeddeloh and was introduced already in 1950. It is a dwarf, evergreen conifer with arching branches. They are formed in fan-like sprays, rising at the angle of about 45°and drooping at the ends, creating an image of an overflowing fountain with a nest in the middle.

The needles are short, light green with bluish hues. In winter they gain bronze shades. Jeddeloh hemlock grows slowly into a hemispherical, compact shrub that needs no pruning to maintain its shape. It does not grow more than about 50 cm high and 80 cm wide in 10 years.

Eastern hemlock needs acid or neutral soil. It will thrive in deep, fertile, constantly moist or partly wet ground in semi-shade. It copes with cold much better than with heat, so avoid hot and dry locations (rockeries, sunny balconies and patios). It is hardy enough to be grown in an outdoor pot, though, but shaded from the hottest midday and afternoon sun. Hardy to about -37°C (USDA zone 3b).
