Periwinkle is a European native plant growing wild in the woods from Central Europe to Caucasus. It is a prostrate, evergreen groundcover offering a long flowering period.
Description of the plant:
Ralph Shugert is another periwinkle variety for lovers of variegated foliage. It was found by a nurseryman David Mackenzie from Michigan, USA, in 1986, and named after his fellow plantsman. It was a natural mutation of large-flowered Bowles’ Variety periwinkle after which it inherited large flowers (3-3.5 cm across). But the leaves are different. They are somewhat lighter green than on the species, and margined cream white to very light yellow when they emerge. Pinwheel-shaped flowers are violet blue, divided into 5 petals, start blooming from early April and bloom continuously until early summer. Plants grow slower than other periwinkles. Patent PP6960 was granted in 1989 (expired now).Leaves are ovate, evergreen, leathery, and glossy. Plant makes long shoots which are best trimmed to achieve a dense and compact mat with plentiful of flowers unless you are looking for a quick groundcover. Periwinkle is ideal in areas where it can be left to its own devices, beneath taller trees, or shrubs, not disturbing smaller and dwarf plants. If desired in a bed along with other plants keep it under control by hard pruning.
It will grow in almost any soil type apart from too dry. It flowers best in full sun in evenly moist ground. In the wild it naturally grows in filtered sun or partial shade. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4).
