New in assortment - dwarf purple rhododendron (Rhododendron impeditum f. ALBUM)14.3.2025
Album is a form rather than a recognized variety, a selection which is characterized by very light lilac-pink to nearly white flowers. These are small, bell-shaped but widely open, and although their colour is not particularly striking, the entire shrub is enchanting thanks to them. Mature plants bloom so profusely that the leaves disappear completely under a blanket of flowers for a few weeks. The main flowering season is from late April to mid-May, though it can produce a few more blooms at the beginning of autumn. It grows in a cushion-like form, rarely reaching 50 cm in height, but it can be twice as wide by around 15 years of age.
As a sun-tolerant species, it can be placed in a large rockery, or a border with other sun-loving ericaceous plants like heather, mountain laurels, and deciduous azaleas. It is a perfect ground cover under tall trees and a low-growing companion for compositions with large shrubs. Unless you are making a bonsai, do not prune it.
Grow this dwarf type in any location, from full sun to full shade, just make sure it is always well mulched. The roots are shallow, spreading to the sides in search of nutrients. Never plant it too deep. The soil has to be acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), rich in humus, cool, and always moist. The ideal soil mixture is peat with lime-free, light garden soil, topped with leaf mould. Very hardy to about -34 °C (USDA zone 4).

New in assortment - Daimyo oak (Quercus dentata 'SIR HAROLD HILLIER')20.2.2025
This oak grows moderately fast and is considered a smaller tree compared to common oaks. Its final height in C.E. climate in gardens with limited root space can reach around 6-8 meters with half the width, but in parks and open landscape, it can grow up to twice that, though over many decades. Young trees make upright branches and form a narrowly pyramidal canopy, which becomes slightly rounded with age. They are often pruned in late winter to achieve a denser habit and maintain a smaller size. Shaped trees look luxurious and offer slightly larger leaves. The trunk is heavily furrowed.
It is not difficult to grow, just avoid waterlogged or water-retentive soil, where a new plant could rot from the roots. Fertilization is not required, nor is it recommended in order to ensure good maturation of new shoots and better branching. Soil pH does not matter. Plant it in full sun only. Newly transplanted trees need a strong support for 2-3 years until they establish. It is very hardy and has already survived winters in Canada at -37 °C.

New in assortment - dawn redwood (Metasequoia glptostroboides ‚SCHIRMANN'S NORDLICHT')20.2.2025
Dawn redwood is closely related to bald cypress (taxodium distichum) and requires very similar conditions: humus-rich, deep, moist soil, some sources even recommend boggy soil. We have been growing it here in partly water-logged location and it has been doing great. Grow it in full sun only. Pruning is possible in spring in order to maintain smaller size or to achieve a denser habit especially in young trees. But avoid over-pruning – do not prune more than 30% of the canopy to prevent stressing the tree. It is fully hardy to min. -34 °C (USDA zone 4).

New in assortment - hardy camellia (Camellia hiemalis 'SHOWA-NO-SAKAE')15.2.2025
Cultivation
Camellias need similar planting like rhododendrons - once you plant them well you need not care for them. They require fresh, ericaceous (acid), peat-based, humus-rich soil that will never dry out but will not be water-retaining like clay. Even moisture and good drainage are key demands for good root growth. We strongly suggest using mycorrhizal fungi when planting. Never plant it too deep and if your soil is clay elevate the root ball accordingly. Fertilizing is recommended after flowering, once a month until late summer.
Crucial is finding a good location and finding one for good - camellias detest transplanting. In the wild they grow under canopies of tall trees or at woodland margins. They dislike direct sunlight and both excess heat in summer and drying winds in colder months. Find a place at the back of the house away from winter and spring sunlight, sheltered from the north-west, or behind a tall hedge with some trees nearby to cast at least dappled shade during summer. Ever seen a camellia in full sun at the seaside? Remember that the air is so humid there that plants do not suffer from drying rays as they keep on drinking all day long. Before it establishes which might take 2-3 years provide enough moisture also in winter if the ground is not frozen but don't overwater! Mulch it well with bark mulch 5-10 cm high. Suggested hardiness is -20° to -23°C (USDA zone 6b).

New in assortment - Makino rhododendron (Rhododendron makinoi 'MAKIYAK')15.2.2025
In good, constantly moist soil, it can tolerate full sun all day. For better appearance, it is recommended to carefully deadhead spent flowers after flowering. The roots are shallow, fibrous and fine, and continue to spread horizontally just under the surface, seeking nutrients, so it should never be planted too deep. Rhododendrons like moisture but cannot stand in waterlogged soil – the soil must be well-drained, acidic, nutrient-rich, cool, and constantly moist. The ideal mixture for the roots is peat mixed with light, lime-free garden soil, topped with old leaves or fine bark. You can feed it with special rhododendron or heather plant fertilizers. Hardy to at least -28 °C. (USDA zone 5).

New in assortment - Lenten rose (Helleborus 'Coseh 4500' HGC ICE'N ROSES® WHITE)11.2.2025
Hellebore likes heavy, evenly moist, neutral to alkaline, rich in humus soil in dappled shade or filtered sun. This hybrid will prefer at least half a day with direct sunlight. Fertilizing will increase flowering and help the leaves remain strong and nice throughout the winter. Grow it somewhere near your house entrance or close to the window you look out of frequently so that you can enjoy the plant when it starts flowering since at that time the weather outside is not yet ideal for walking around the garden. The flowers can cheer up a number of grey and gloomy days of late winter therefore thumbs up for hellebore! Harmful if eaten. Hardy to at least -29 °C (USDA zone 5).

New in assortment - glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum 'Bokrascreen' GREEN SCREEN)11.2.2025
It grows upright, at a moderate speed (approximately 30 cm per year), and forms dense shrubs with an oval to rounded-pyramidal shape, which can be shaped and trimmed in any way from the end of winter to mid-summer. Without pruning, its height is around 4-5 meters in gardens and up to double that in zones 8 and higher in places with unlimited root space. You can use it as a hedge with a spacing of 70-100 cm from each other, or as a handsome, flowering, evergreen specimen plant with an interesting colour change of leaves.
Evergreen privets will grow in almost any soil, but in acidic to neutral soil with plenty of nutrients they will have the most intense leaf colour. The soil must be free draining, as they usually die off after the first winter in water-logged soil. Once established, they cope with long-lasting drought very well. Variegated forms should be planted in full sun, or in places with winter shade but summer sun. Glossy privet is suitable for warmer locations of zone 6 as its tested hardiness is so far -18 °C, but it is expected to withstand much more. We recommend mulching it well for the winter. During harsher winters, it may lose some leaves or even branch tips, but all will readily regenerate in the spring.

New in assortment - rhododendron (Rhododendron 'EDITH HACHMANN')10.2.2025
Edith Hachmann rhododendron is a large-flowered hybrid with deep ruby red flowers and all the qualities you expect from a good rhododendron. The flowers are large, conspicuously spotted with dark maroon to black spots and blotches, and the contrast is enhanced even more by the stamens with conspicuous white anthers. They open from the first decade of May in upright clusters and do not suffer from rain damage. It grows moderately fast to fast into a sturdy and upright shape, reaching a height and width of around 1.4 m at 10 years of age. The variety is healthy and blooms regularly and abundantly.
For a better-looking plant deadhead where possible. The roots are shallow, spreading to sides in search for nutrients. Never plant them too deep. The soil must be acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), rich in humus, cool and always moist but well-drained. Ideal soil mixture is peat with lime-free, light garden soil topped with leaf-mould.
