New York aster is an old time favourite in Czech and Slovak gardens. These plants are carefree and flower over a long period. Since they are so attractive and popular breeders keep coming up with new, improved varieties that brighten up our early autumn gardens.Description of the plant:
Violetta is a fantastic variety of New York aster with deep violet-blue flowers with golden yellow centres. They are very attractive to bees, bumble bees, and butterflies. Stems grow slightly over a meter tall and leaves are rich green, narrowly elongated, very resistant to common aster diseases. Blooming time is early September until late October. To multiply the number of flowers and to achieve a smaller and bushier plant pinching in late June is recommended. These asters are more resistant to common aster diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot if grown in constantly moist, rich soil (any pH). Grow them in full sun and fertilize annually for profuse flowering. Cut back to ground level in early spring. Most of them are exceptionally hardy. New York asters are hardy to min. -30°C (USDA zone 5) but some varieties can take much deeper frost.
