New York aster is an old time favourite in Czech and Slovak gardens. These plants are carefree and flower over a long period. Since they are so attractive and popular, breeders keep coming up with new, improved varieties that brighten up our early autumn gardens.Description of the plant:
Wood’s Purple is one of three (so far) New York asters from the Wood’s series. It makes compact and bushy plants with profusion of single, violet flowers with yellow centres already from late August. They keep popping up one by one until the whole clump is covered with violet rays which persist until the frost. Wood’s asters are very healthy and their narrow, rich green, glossy leaves are remarkable resistant to common aster diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot. New York aster needs evenly moist (not wet), fertile soil of almost any pH value. Grow it in full sun and fertilize annually for profuse flowering. Cut back to ground level in early spring or in early summer if you want a lower but bushier plant. It will flower one or two week later if pruned this way. Hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4), but very possibly much more.
