One of the original trees found in natural woodlands of Europe is hornbeam. Varieties of this deciduous tree are becoming more and more popular in gardens, too.
Description of the plant:
Pendula is a weeping form of hornbeam. Mature plants make gracious looking specimens with irregularly weeping or cascading branches. Their crowns are usually not too symmetrical providing a unique appearance for every plant. Naturally the crown grows slowly into a large, umbrella-shaped head with branches touching the ground. But not many gardens can accommodate such a plant so it is commonly pruned to various shapes in early spring.

Hornbeams do best in full sun and are not fussy about soil type. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
