Tickseed is a popular perennial that will suit both the modern city gardens as well as natural landscapes in the country. Modern varieties are bred for more beautiful flower colours, improved garden performance or hardiness, and obviously extended flowering period.
Description of the plant:
The UPTICK™ series of perennial tickseed is bred by Blair Winner from Santa Paula in California, USA. The aim was to select freely flowering plants of attractive colours and reliable hardiness. UPTICK™ YELLOW & RED has pastel yellow, daisy-like flowers with rich mahogany eye around a centre packed with numerous, short, golden yellow stamens. The petals have notched tips. They come out in abundance from June until the first frost. Stems are about 25-35 cm tall, upright, and strong enough not to bend. The plant makes a dense, compact, and rather wide tuft. Leaves are medium green, narrowly three-lobed and resistant to common diseases. Patent No. PP28865 was issued in 2018. Tickseed will grow in nearly any free-draining soil, and as it withstands drought it is popular for rockeries. Making it a glowing feature in your perennial garden bed is the reasonable and expected way of using it. But placing it among small shrubs with different foliage and flowers will mean an honour for this easy and affordable beauty. Deadheading will make the plant nicer and bring forward formation of new flower buds but is not necessary. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
