Iceplant is a beautiful rock garden perennial from South Africa. There are a few hardy species that can withstand continental climate winters in sharply drained soil. They are evergreen plant and fairly quickly cover large areas and provide sensational amount of eye-catching flowers over a long period. WOW® (=Wheels of Wonder) is a Japanese series bred by Koichiro Nishikawa since 2010. There are several varieties to date that were selected among naturally cross-bred plants of mostly delosperma nubigenum.
Description of the plant:
WHEELS OF WONDER® PURPLE, or simply just Purple Wonder iceplant, produces large, 3-4 cm across, daisy-like, bright purple violet flowers with pure white centres from the first hot days of late spring until the last sunny and warm days of autumn before the first frost. The flowers open only on a sunny day and close in the evening or if it’s overcast. The water-absorbing foliage is medium green, thick, almost needle-like, and evergreen. The plant grows fast and makes beautiful flowering carpets in no short time.

Iceplant loves sunny and dry locations, excess watering could kill it. It is best for rockeries with plenty of gritty material. In raised beds and borders e.g., along pavements make sure the soil is sharply drained so that the plant never stands in water. Hardiness is closely related to the drainage level and is guaranteed to -18 °C (USDA zone 7), and perhaps to -24 °C with perfect drainage.
