Fargesia is a genus of non-running bamboo which is not only the most suitable type for our climate (zone 6), it is also one of the most attractive bamboos offering beautiful plants.
Description of the plant:
Great Wall is an English variety of fargesia nitida forming a compact, dense clump. Its leaves are narrowly elongated, evergreen, rich green or with some blue green hues. It makes strong stems that grow fast in the first year, but only the next year the leaves open up. When adult, the stems are slightly arching making a somewhat relaxed appearance.

This bamboo is clump-growing so it does not need root barrier as it is not invasive. Grow it in fertile, moisture retentive soil. If it has enough moisture it can be grown in full sun, otherwise in part shade. It is hardy to about -26°C and withstands short spells a little lower (USDA zone 5b). It is common that some leaves fall down in winter but are quickly replaced by new foliage in mid spring.
